The city of Oulu was founded by the order of King Charles IX of Sweden by the Gulf of Bothnia in 1605. It was the capital of the Providence of Oulu from 1776 to 2009. The name Oulu comes from a word in the Sami language meaning floodwater. The location of Oulu at the mouth of the Oulu River has been vivid trading site since ancient history. From being a town known for tar and salmon, Oulu has evolved into a growing modern centre of competence. Currently, Oulu is the largest city in Northern Finland. There are about 200,000 inhabitants in Oulu and the population is one of the youngest in Europe. Approximately, 33 % of people within Oulu region have university degree. The University of Oulu has around 16,000 students and six faculties. Oulu offers an excellent setting for study, work, research and development. More than 600 high tech companies operate in Oulu region.
