SUMMARY:Applications of Photonics 2024
DESCRIPTION:UEF’s popular presentations on Applications of Photonics will be again held this year as a series of hybrid lectures live in Joensuu & online in Microsoft Teams. The presentations are organized in collaboration with PREIN flagship and Photonics Finland. \n\n\n\nHosted by Professor Jyrki Saarinen and starting on October 29th (six lectures per week: Tuesdays at 12-14\, Wednesdays at 10-12 and at Thursdays 14-16)\, the lectures consist of applications of photonics and company overviews given by professionals of the field from various companies\, and after each lecture\, a dedicated discussion section offers networking possibilities to listeners from all around the world. \n\n\n\nLectures can be joined in set presentation locations in UEF Joensuu campus\, or online via Microsoft Teams. Joining the lectures is free and open for everyone. \n\n\n\nConfirmed participating companies and presenters include: SCHOTT Primoceler\, Vexlum\, VTT\, Kuva Space\, Vaisala\, HyCom Core\, BioNavis\, Gasera\, Valmet\, Microsoft\, Ecoaims\, LEDiL\, Tobii\, Dispelix\, Nanocomp\, Polar Electro\, Raute\, Winse Power\, Kelluu\, Senop\, and Visual Festival Light Artists. \n\n\n\nSee the Schedule HERE on each webinar session. The same Microsoft Teams link can be used for all sessions.

SUMMARY:PREIN Workshop on On-Chip Photonics for Sensing
DESCRIPTION:This complimentary PREIN workshop addresses the research\, development\, and use of different chip-scale photonics technologies for sensing applications. Examples of such technologies include\, but are not limited to: laser chips\, other chip-scale light sources\, photonic integrated circuits (PICs)\, optical waveguide components\, optical MEMS chips\, optical detector chips and wafer-level manufacturing and testing of diffractive optics. Present and future applications for these technologies include lidars\, wearable sensors\, medical imaging\, industrial process metrology\, hyperspectral imaging\, inertial sensors and many more. This workshop is organized by PREIN WP3 (Advanced Photonic Components)\, but presentations and attendees are not limited to WP3 or to the PREIN consortium. All who study or work in the field of the workshop are welcome to attend. \n\n\n\nTime: Monday November 18\, 2024 at 11-17Venue: meeting room Pelikaani I-II\, Sokos Hotel Flamingo\, Tasetie 8\, 01510 Vantaa \n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\n\n11:00-11:10 Welcome and introduction to the workshop (Timo Aalto\, VTT)\n\n\n\n11:10-12:20 Session 1: Passive PICs11:10-11:35 An overview of 3 µm SOI PICs and recent results in zero birefringence and Faraday rotation (Katherine Bryant\, VTT)\n\n11:35-12:00 Strip-loaded Mach–Zehnder interferometer for absolute refractive index sensing (Doughan Isaac\, UEF)\n\n\n\n12:00-12:20 Matrix analysis of high-density arrayed waveguides: Crosstalk suppression by bending (Panu Hilden\, Aalto)\n\n\n\n\n\n12:20-13:00 Lunch in Bankett- restaurant (paid by PREIN)\n\n\n\n13:00-13:25 Session 2: Posters\n\n\n\n13:25-14:30Session 3: Active PICs\n\n13:25-13:50 III-V Active-Passive PIC Technology and Applications in Remote Sensing (Paul Verrinder\, Aalto)\n\n\n\n13:50-14:10 2 µm GaSb µ-transfer printed gain devices for integration on silicon-on-insulator platform for external cavity laser (Heidi Tuorila\, TAU)\n\n\n\n14:10-14:30 Hybrid GaSb/Si3N4 widely tunable Vernier laser emitting around 2.55 µm (Samu-Pekka Ojanen\, TAU)\n\n\n\n\n\n14:30-14:50 Coffee break (3. floor)\n\n\n\n14:50-16:20Session 4: Focus on applications\n\n14:50-15:15 Infrared micro devices for NDIR gas analysis (Mikko Tuohiniemi\, Vaisala)\n\n\n\n15:15-15:40 Fabry-Pérot interferometers and nano-thermoelectric bolometers for imaging and sensing (Aapo Varpula\, VTT)\n\n\n\n15:40-16:00 Integrated optical ultrasound transducer on thick SOI waveguide platform (Päivi Heimala\, VTT)\n\n\n\n16:00-16:20 Optical phased arrays and tunable lasers towards LIDAR applications (Ari Hokkanen\, VTT)\n\n\n\n\n\n16:20-17:00 Social event and networking\n\n\n\n\nParticipation in the workshop is free of charge (inlcuding coffee\, lunch and drinks and snacks in the networking) \n\n\n\nLate registrations are still accepted until November 10\, 2024. \n\n\n\nRegister  \n\n\n\nContact person: Timo Aalto\, VTT (timo.aalto@vtt.fi)
