We are looking for an ambitious and results-oriented researcher with a strong background in superconducting circuits and/or optics. As a researcher at VTT, you will have a key role in the development of novel methods and applications for optically driven superconducting devices, with applications ranging from metrological quantum standards to quantum computers. You identify and solve problems independently and creatively, while working closely and flexibly with a team of experts.
In this position, you have an opportunity to participate in developing a novel technology which aims at enabling large-scale utilization of the potential of superconducting electronics. You will work in multidisciplinary EU and national projects that combine superconducting electronics like Josephson junctions circuits with optoelectronics and integrated and conventional optics. VTT has various key assets in its technology portfolio which allows covering the whole chain of these elements needed to create unique devices for the future needs of quantum technologies. Recently, VTT announced that it will acquire Finland’s first quantum computer, with 20.7 million euros granted by the Finnish government for the purpose. VTT’s efforts on superconductor-based quantum computing provide interesting test platforms for the optical technologies.
With us, you will be responsible for
You will be responsible for contributing to the development of the above described novel devices. You may choose concentrating either on component level or system level design and characterization. You will work in close collaboration with experts in the specific technologies both at VTT and collaborating institutes in Finland and abroad. For example, you may focus on the design and characterization of the whole system consisting of superconducting electronics, optoelectronics and optics. Alternatively, you may focus on cryogenic optoelectronics or developing measurement tools for the high-frequency characterization of these devices in situ at cryogenic temperatures.
Who we are looking for
We expect you to have hands-on experience in superconducting circuits (design, characterization) and/or optics, and a master’s or PhD level degree in physics, electrical engineering, or other field connected closely to hardware. We are interested in both junior and senior professionals, but some practical working knowledge of at least one the following areas is needed:
cryogenic (superconducting) electronics, e.g. Josephson junction circuits
lasers and optoelectronics
Experience in designing and building scientific apparatuses, performing experiments and analyzing data are highly valued. Electronics design and assembly skills are also appreciated. Numerical modeling and practical programming skills are certainly necessary to support efficient design work and analysis of results. You are proficient in English. Experience in fabrication of micro/nanoelectronic devices is not expected, but can be an asset.
