Nordic Workgroups Meeting

For the first time Photonics Finland and PhotonicsSweden are collaborating in arranging a joint meeting between Photonic21 workgroups WG1-WG7 on May 29th, 16:00 to 19:00, at Radisson Blu hotel in Oulu.

Attending is Free of Charge – Please click here to register.

The preliminary topics will be based on:
• Why do we need workgroups?
• Presentation of participants (short pitch talks),
• Photonics21 stakeholder Harri Kopola (VTT) to talk about coming next 3 years calls,
• Discussions about workgroups impact on Photonics post 2020,
• Nordic collaboration in future calls
• Nordic B2B possibilities
• Etc….

Even though each WG might not be fully occupied, all WG’s will discuss in a round table arrangement. We believe this meeting is a good way to collaborate in Photonics between our Nordic countries! Our Workgroup arrangements are the same as Photonics21’s, so please read more about Workgroups here.

WORK-GROUP 1 Information and Communication
Information and Communication Technologies, underpinned by optical broadband communuication technoologies, will address many of the socio-economic challenges. ICT supports and enables new ways of living and managing resources.

WORK-GROUP 2 Industrial Manufacturing and Quality
With the ‘laser light’ tool, manufacturing processes can be handled automatically and flexibly, producing components and products of extraordinary quality, and in a much ‘greener’ way in comparison to most other energy sources.

WORK-GROUP 3 Life Sciences and Health
For most European countries, the projected demographic changes will have drastic consequences for European citizens and their healthcare systems. For example, the number of people older than 65 years will double by 2030, leading to a dramatic growth of age-related diseases including Alzheimer’s disease, cardiac infarction, stroke, age related macular degeneration, diabetes, kidney failure, osteoarthritis, and cancer.

WORK-GROUP 4 Emerging Lighting, Electronics and Displays
This topic deals with a broad palette of interrelated photonics technologies, each showing different times to market, notably, LED (Light Emitting Diodes), OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes), OPV (Organic Photovoltaic), Flexible Electronics based on OLAE (Organic Large Area Electronics) and Display technology.

WORK-GROUP 5 Security, Metrology and Sensors
Today, over 70 million organic and inorganic substances are on record, and for most of these, little is known about their potential danger to humans. Although only a small fraction of this plethora of molecules are marketed and released into the environment, our society is confronted daily with a growing number of potentially hazardous chemicals.

WORK-GROUP 6 Design and Manufacturing of Components and Systems
As a fundamental pillar of modern industry, a Key Enabling Technology, photonics underpins solutions for the widest possible range of socio-economic needs. For example, the Internet of today depends on the ubiquitous application of photonics in telecommunications infrastructure and, as our society become ever more information-intensive, our needs in this respect will continue to grow. Laser-based techniques have revolutionised manufacturing industry and medical procedur.

WORK-GROUP 7 Photonics Research, Education and Training
Major progress is needed both on advanced research, and on education and training of highly-skilled workforce, if photonics is to address successfully the major socio-economical challenges facing Europe, ranging from health care to security, from energy saving to efficient and clean industrial production, and from environmental protection to fast and efficient communications.

The convention starts with a get-together event on evening May 29. The program of the conference reflects current activities and trends in Optics and Photonics in Finland, gathering both academic researchers and industrial representatives. Industrial session consist of 4 themes: lighting and displays, industrial sensing, flexible optoelectronics and imaging and panel discussion about Photonics revolution.
