Photonics Finlandin väitöskirjapalkinto – The Best Doctoral Thesis in Photonics award 2026

Photonics Finland haluaa antaa tunnustusta ansiokkaalle Suomessa tehdylle fotoniikan alan väitöskirjatyölle ja kannustaa alan korkeatasoiseen tutkimukseen. Tämän johdosta seuran hallitus on päättänyt julistaa haettavaksi vuoden 2025 parhaan fotoniikan alan väitöskirjan palkinnon, jonka hakuaika päättyy 1.4.2026.
Palkinnon suuruus on 1 000 €. Voittaja julkistetaan OPD2026 -tapahtumassa Jyväskylässä toukokuussa 2026.

Photonics Finland invites applications for the Best Doctoral Thesis in Photonics completed in Finland in 2025.
The winner will be awarded with a 1000 € prize at Optics & Photonics Days 2026 (OPD2026) in Jyväskylä in May 2026.

Applications must be submitted using the online form (see below).
If the thesis is not available online through a permanent link, applicants should submit a PDF copy to thesis@photonics.fi.

Application deadline: April 1, 2026

Säännöt

• Väitöskirjan vuosi määräytyy väitöstilaisuuden päivämäärän perusteella.
• Hakijan tulee olla valmistunut tohtoriksi hakuajan päättymiseen mennessä.
• Palkittavan valitsee Photonics Finlandin tieteellinen neuvottelukunta.
• Arviointikriteerit ovat:
  • tieteellinen laatu
  • tieteellinen ja yhteiskunnallinen merkitys fotoniikan alalla
• Palkinto julkistetaan OPD2026-tapahtumassa.
• Voittajan nimi ja väitöskirjan aihe julkaistaan Photonics Finlandin verkkosivuilla sekä Fotoni-lehdessä.

Rules

• The year of the dissertation is determined by the date of the public defence.
• The applicant must have completed their doctoral degree by the application deadline.
• The award recipient is selected by the Scientific Advisory Board of Photonics Finland.
• The evaluation criteria are:
  • scientific quality
  • scientific and societal significance within the field of photonics
• The award will be announced at OPD2026.
• The winner’s name and the topic of the dissertation will be published on the Photonics Finland website and in the Fotoni magazine.

Hakeminen

Palkintoa voi hakea kuka tahansa, joka on väitellyt menestyksekkäästi Suomessa fotoniikan alalta vuonna 2025.

Hakeminen tapahtuu seuraavasti:

1. Hakija täyttää verkossa olevan hakemuslomakkeen 
2. Jos väitöskirja ei ole saatavilla verkosta pysyväislinkillä, hakijan tulee toimittaa väitöskirjan PDF-versio osoitteeseen:
   thesis@photonics.fi
3. Hakemuksessa tulee käyttää mahdollisuuksien mukaan pysyväisosoitteita (URN, DOI, tms.).
4. Vastaanotetut hakemukset vahvistetaan hakijalle sähköpostitse.

Application Process

Anyone who has successfully defended a doctoral thesis in Finland in the field of photonics in 2025 is eligible to apply.

The application process is as follows:

1. The applicant fills in the online application form .
2. If the dissertation is not available online via a permanent link, the applicant must submit a PDF version to:
   thesis@photonics.fi
3. Permanent identifiers (such as URN, DOI, etc.) should be used in the application whenever possible.
4. All received applications will be acknowledged by email.
