The International Day of Light provides an annual focal point for the continued appreciation of the central role that light plays in the lives of the citizens of the world in areas of science, culture and art, education, sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications and energy. Following the highly successful International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015, the broad theme of light allows many different sectors of society to participate in activities around the world around May 16th to raise awareness of science and technology, art and culture, and their importance in achieving the goals of UNESCO — education, equality and peace

Valon viikot 2024
Haluamme yhdessä juhlistaa Kansainvälistä valon päivää (International Day of Light), jota vietetään vuosittain toukokuun kuudestoista päivä tarjoamalla lapsille valoon ja valon tutkimukseen liittyviä tiedetyöpajoja. Valon viikot ovat osa Kansainvälisen valon päivän virallista ohjelmaa.
Tänä vuonna Fotoniikan lippulaiva PREIN ja Itä-Suomen yliopiston LUMA-keskus järjestävät Valoa perheille -tapahtuman lauantaina 4.5. ja ovat osana SciFest -tapahtumaa 23.–25.5. Tampereen yliopiston Juniversity järjestää Kansainvälisenä valon päivänä 16.5. työpajoja Tampereen yliopiston Paidiassa. Kaikissa näissä kolmessa tapahtumassa on työpajoja, joiden teemana on valo. Valon tutkimus eli fotoniikka liittyy fysiikkaan, kemiaan ja moniin luonnon ilmiöihin ja sillä on lukematon määrä sovelluksia tekniikan alalla.
Itä-Suomen yliopisto ja Joensuun kaupunginorkesteri toteuttavat yhteistyönä konserttisarjan nimeltään Sound and Light – ääntä ja valoa. Konsertissa jousikvartetin keulahahmona loistaa soolosellisti Akito Goto ja valoinstallaation esitykseen luo valotaiteilija Onni Tahvanainen. Konsertin esityspäivät ovat 5.5., 11.5. ja 12.5.
Olemme myös keränneet omatoimisesti toteutettavia valoon liittyviä työpajaohjeita ja materiaaleja, joista voi koulussa tai kotona toteuttaa haluamansa. Itsenäisesti toteutettavat työpajat sopivat kaiken ikäisille. Alla on lisäksi videoita, joissa opiskelijat ja tutkijat kertovat fotoniikasta.

Light Weeks 2024
We aim to collectively celebrate the International Day of Light, observed annually on May 16th, by offering children science workshops centered around light and light research. The Light Weeks are an integral part of the official program of the International Day of Light.
This year, the flagship of Photonics, PREIN, and the LUMA Centre of the University of Eastern Finland are organizing the “Light for Families – Valoa perheille” event on Saturday, May 4th, and are also part of the SciFest event from May 23rd to 25th. Tampere University’s Juniversity will host workshops on May 16th at Tampere University’s Paidia. All three of these events feature workshops with a focus on light. The study of light, or photonics, is associated with physics, chemistry, and many natural phenomena and has countless applications in the field of engineering.
University of Eastern Finland and Joensuu City Orchestra are collaborating to present a concert series titled Sound and Light. The concert features solo cellist Akito Goto as the leading figure of the string quartet, accompanied by light installations created by visual artist Onni Tahvanainen. The performance dates for the concert are May 5th, May 11th, and May 12th.
We have also collected self-implementable workshop instructions and materials (in Finnish) related to light, suitable for execution either at school or at home, catering to diverse age groups. Furthermore, there are videos featuring students and researchers discussing photonics.
