Spectral Engines wins 2016 Photonics Prism Award

Spectral Engines is the first Finnish company to have received the Photonics Prism Award, awarded by SPIE (Int. Society for Optics and Photonics) and Photonics Media. The award was presented on Feb 17, 2016 in San Francisco, California, USA. Sometimes referred to as the ‘Oscars of Photonics’, the Prism Awards for Photonics Innovation is a leading international competition that honours the best new photonic products on the market.

CEO Jarkko Antila comments: “This is a great recognition to our work and shows that we are on the right track. I would like to thank SPIE and the photonics community for this great award!” The winning product innovation, Wireless IR Analyzer, was revealed at the Photonics West exhibition in San Francisco.

The product essentially shrinks a material lab into a compact, pocket-size format and simple operation. The sensor can be used for several applications, such as food content analysis, material recognition and recycling to name a few. “At smaller than one-inch-cube, this technology will give people a kind of ‘sixth sense’, enabling them to interact with the world like never before”, explains Antila. “We see that this technology will expand to many applications, making a significant impact on people’s lives.”
