Spectral Imaging for Medical and Health Applications – With a Focus on Dental Use Cases

October 9 @ 9:00 am 3:30 pm EEST

Spectral imaging is powerful tool in modern science, machine vision, medicine, industry, agriculture, forestry, arts, and many other areas of modern human activities. Spectral imaging provides an easy way to compare and distinguish objects which look similar to human eyes, but actually different.

This one-day hands-on training course provides opportunity to understand how you can apply spectral imaging in your own field: science, industry, biology, medicine, arts.

The course will focus on three technology demonstrations:

  1. Spectra and spectroscopy – a simple way to distinguish objects;
  2. Spectral cameras and their application;
  3. Spectral data processing using non-commercial software (on example of Python).

Learning Objectives

  • Gain exposure to a biomedical case study: processing dental spectral images to reveal veins and arteries in the mouth cavity.
  • Understand the basic principles of spectral imaging.
  • Explore potential applications of spectral imaging in different sectors.
  • Learn operation principles of spectral cameras, including live demonstrations in the lab.
  • Understand the structure of spectral datasets (large-scale, gigabyte-level data).
  • Acquire practical skills in Python to:
  • Open and visualize spectral data.
  • Apply necessary preprocessing steps.
  • Perform basic spectral image analysis.
  • Relate methods learned to workflows in participants’ own domains.
