University of Eastern Finland (UEF) has gathered its research under the Institute of Photonics with almost 100 scientists. Research is being made in departments of physics and mathematics, computer science, chemistry and biology. Photonics research is focused on coherence theory, nano and bio photonics, spectral color research, optics material research and modern manufacturing methods of optics. UEF has international master- and doctoral study programs on photonics. UEF Joensuu campus in collaboration with the Joensuu Science Park hosts the Photonics Finland Office and the European Optical Society Office.
