Material Development Engineer

We are looking for an energetic development engineer to join our multinational team of highly skilled specialists. You will work in our Fiber Product Development team. Your main goal is the development of materials, and of processes for material production, to offer differential advantage to the nLIGHT fiber customers. This includes for example design of experiments, testing and characterizing new manufacturing processes, and implementing new characterization methods for materials and processes. The products are silica based doped optical fibers made using nLIGHT’s proprietary DND process. You are experienced in optical or material related metrology. You are expected to have project management experience and skills. You will be working mainly with internal customers, and you are expected to play a significant role in improving our material characterization, and to work towards improving our material characteristics, quality, and production capability.

Qualifications and skill set

  • 5-10 years of experience in materials science, metrology, lasers, photonics, or physics
  • Experience in optical or material related metrology
  • Basic understanding of materials science and solid state physics
  • Knowledge and capability to improve our material characterization
  • Project management skills
  • Demonstrated capability to achieve set targets
  • Well organized – measurement set ups and results, reports
  • Citizen or permanent resident of Finland (or other Wassenaar country)
  • Fluent Finnish and English
  • Good knowledge of MS Office programs
  • Strong presentation and communication skills; and ability to synthesize/simplify complex problems
  • Masters level degree from a relevant field required
  • DSc or PhD considered a plus
  • Trained and experienced in 6S and DOE considered a plus
  • Knowledge of scripting or programming considered a plus
  • Knowledge of materials related process development considered a plus

Open position: Principal Optical Engineer, Diffractive Optics, Physical optics (Dispelix) Espoo

Dispelix Oy is looking for an experienced and highly self-motivated principal optical engineer to develop modelling tools for complex diffractive optical elements used in next generation see-through displays.

The successful candidate should have a solid background in diffractive optics, ray tracing, problem solving, numerical optimization, and programming with C++ and Matlab. The basic knowledge of geometrical optics, illumination optics and light polarization control is also required. You should have ability to independently develop algorithms and tools to solve large scale optimization problems. You will collaborate with other designers and engineers to advance diffractive see-through display systems.


Responsibilities
• Develop and implement new optimization tools for optical systems with both geometric and diffractive optical characteristics.
• Design and optimize optical grating structures.
• Research and develop new optical solutions for next generation see-through displays.
• Provide support for in-house and external prototyping and manufacturing efforts
• Work with technicians and other engineers to integrate relevant theory, compile requirements and coordinate design reviews.


Requirements
• M.Sc. or PhD degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related technical discipline.
• 6+ years of experience in diffractive optics design and optimization
• 6+ years of experience in programming with C++ and Matlab
• Ability to independently solve complex numerical problems
• Familiarity with parallel computing using MPI
• Good knowledge of optics including illumination, imaging, physical and geometrical optics, polarization control, coherence, and colorimetry.
• Excellent communication skills as well as the ability to work cross-functionally with the team
• Ability to travel both domestically and internationally (up to 15%)

Stunningly diverse SciFest science festival currently ongoing in Joensuu

SciFest, the number one science event of the year, will take place at Joensuu Arena for the ninth time in a row on 23–25 April 2015. Dozens of workshops, lectures, presentations, competitions and science cafés open to everyone focus on light and its properties, light-related phenomena and the significance of light.

“SciFest 2015 – Power of Light!” is open on Thursday and and Friday from 9:00 to 17:00, and on Saturday from 10:00 to 15:00. In addition to the traditional workshops aimed at families, Saturday’s programme also features the SciEdu professional development event for teachers. SciFest is open to everyone and free of charge. The festival is organised by Joensuu Science Society in cooperation with the University of Eastern Finland and other partners.

Come explore the power of light!

Is it possible to paint with light? How can robots be controlled with the help of light? Did you know that insects produce light, or that light can be used to study plants and humans? SciFest provides answers to all of these questions, and the festival’s offering is tailored to cater for all age groups. In addition to light, the festival also addresses the fields of natural sciences, technology, music and culture.

“For the first time, we are faced with the positive challenge of how to fit everyone who wants to organise a workshop in Joensuu Arena. Especially Saturday’s SciEdu professional development event aimed at teachers in the Joensuu region will motivate workshop organisers to stay for the entire festival. So we are looking for bright and insightful moments here at SciFest on Saturday,” says Ilkka Jormanainen, Technology Manager at Joensuu Science Society.

This year, SciFest includes a record number of companies and other organisations as workshop organisers, practical organisers and financial partners.

“We are very proud of how actively companies and other actors in the region have participated in organising and supporting this year’s SciFest. The involvement of new actors is just wonderful, and will surely help us take our activities to the next level,” says Pauliina Korhonen, Executive Manager of Joensuu Science Society.

Rapid growth and new career opportunities in silicon photonics

Finland is one of the pioneers in silicon photonics research. Here, like in many other places around the world, the related R&D activities are now increasing fast and leading into large-scale commercial exploitation. Following the long and well-known success of microelectronics the silicon photonics technology is now being taken into use in numerous applications that include short and long range optical communication, sensing and imaging.

The growth of silicon photonics R&D is now creating new job opportunities in Finland. As the Finnish pioneer in the field, VTT is recruiting one new Research Scientist for the design, simulation and testing of high-speed silicon photonic components, as well as 1-2 Summer Trainees to do silicon photonics measurements in Micronova.
